Quartz
Engineered, non-porous, consistent slab to slab and never needs sealing. The most popular choice for good practical reasons.
Granite
Natural stone where every slab is different. If you want a specific piece, go and select the actual slab rather than a sample.
Solid surface
Seamless, repairable and renewable with sanding. Softer than stone, and the integrated sink option is genuinely useful.
Butcher block or laminate
The value options, and entirely reasonable in a laundry, a pantry or a rental where the budget is better spent elsewhere.
What it costs
What actually drives the price.
We do not quote countertop installation over the phone, because an honest number needs somebody to look at the job. These are the things that move it.

Material and grade
Laminate, solid surface, granite and quartz span a wide range, and within quartz and granite the grade or group changes the slab price substantially.

Square footage and slab yield
You pay for the slab, not only the finished area. An awkward layout that cannot be nested efficiently uses more slab than the measurement suggests.

Edge profile and detail
A straight eased edge is standard. Ogee, mitered and waterfall edges are fabrication time, and a waterfall island end is close to a second top.

Cutouts and sink type
Undermount sinks need a polished reveal, farmhouse sinks need support, and cooktop and faucet cutouts each add shop time.

Removal and reconnection
Taking out the old tops, disconnecting and reconnecting plumbing, and any cabinet leveling needed before the new tops land.

Slab selection
Done at the yard for natural stone, from samples for quartz. Worth doing in person if the pattern matters to you.
Template
After cabinets are installed and level, never from drawings. Digitally templated, typically an hour on site.
Fabrication
Usually one to two weeks. Cutting, edging, polishing and cutouts all happen in the shop.
Installation
Half a day for most kitchens, plus the plumber to reconnect. Silicone needs a day before the sink is used heavily.

Templating before cabinets are level
A top templated to cabinets that then get shimmed will not sit right, and stone cannot be adjusted on site.

Ignoring seam placement
Seams are inevitable on larger kitchens. Where they land is a decision, and it should be yours rather than the fabricator’s convenience.

Unsupported overhangs
Anything past about a foot of unsupported stone cracks under someone leaning on it. Corbels or steel plate belong in the quote.

Choosing from a sample chip
Granite and heavily veined quartz vary enormously across a slab. A two-inch sample tells you the color family and nothing else.

A licensed and insured contractor will have this to hand and will not be irritated by the question.

Is the estimate written, itemized and free?
A verbal number is not an estimate. Itemized means you can compare two quotes on the same basis.

What happens if you find something once you start?
The honest answer names a rate and a process. The answer to worry about is that it never happens.

Who is actually doing the work?
Employee crew or subcontractor is not a wrong answer either way, but you should know which, and who carries the insurance.

What is the workmanship warranty, and is it in writing?
Materials carry a manufacturer warranty. Workmanship is the contractor, and it should be written down.

Will you pull the permit?
For permitted work, a contractor who suggests skipping it is telling you something important about the rest of the job.
