What is the difference between granite, quartz and quartzite?
Granite is natural stone, porous, needs periodic sealing and every slab is unique. Quartz is engineered from ground stone and resin — non-porous, never needs sealing, consistent in pattern, but can scorch and discolors in direct sunlight. Quartzite is natural stone that looks like marble and is harder than granite. Quartz is the low-maintenance choice; natural stone is the one with character.
How is countertop cost calculated?
By square footage of the material, plus fabrication. Fabrication is the part people underestimate: edge profile, sink and cooktop cutouts, seams, backsplash and any radius work are all priced separately. Removing and disposing of the existing top adds. Slab material varies by a wide margin between entry-level granite and exotic stone, so the same kitchen can differ several-fold.
How long does a countertop replacement take?
Templating happens once cabinets are set, then fabrication typically takes one to two weeks, then installation is usually a single day. You are without a sink from the moment the old top comes off until the plumber reconnects, usually the day after installation. Kitchens are unusable for that window, which is worth planning around.
Do granite countertops need sealing?
Yes, periodically — typically annually, though it varies by stone and by how much it is used. Sealing is a five-minute job you can do yourself and is the main maintenance difference between natural and engineered stone.
Can countertops be repaired rather than replaced?
